Olympic Wrestling - Competitions

Wrestling is a sport played between two players. The players fight unarmed with each other. In wrestling, a player is declared winner when he pins the opponent down. Wrestling is one of the most demanding athletic sports physically and mentally.

Wrestling is one of the events that have been included in the schedule of the modern Summer Games since 1896, held in Athens. Since then, from the very first modern Summer Games wrestling has been held in every Summer Olympics except the 1900 Games and has made a permanent place in the Olympics program. In the Olympic Games, men compete in two disciplines, Greco-Roman and freestyle, while the women's events are in freestyle only.
Olympic Wrestling - Competitions

Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded in seven weight classes for men in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, and four weight classes for women in freestyle. Each weight class finishes in one day, moving from randomly drawn preliminary pool matches, to scoring-ranked elimination bouts, to the medal round.

Greco-Roman Competition

In Greco-Roman emphasizes the upper body in that wrestlers may not attempt moves on an opponent's legs or use their own legs to initiate a trip or hold.

Freestyle Competition

Freestyle is as it sounds, allowing athletes to use both their arms and legs to attack an opponent above and below the waist.
